B For a herder (放牧人) in Africa, the hardest part of the job is searching for cattle lost in the bush. But for Andrew, a herder at a farm in Zimbabwe, it"s not a problem. Once he spots Toro, he knows the rest of the herd is nearby. That"s because Toro isn"t an ordinary member of the herd. He"s a giraffe. In hot weather, cattle rest in the shade under his belly. And because of his height, Toro can spot lions long before they come close to the herd.

Toro"s unusual situation came about after his mother was killed by lions. Toro survived the attack, but he was left with no one to protect him or give him milk. About two days later, some herders spotted and rescued him. With the permission of the Department of Wildlife, the herders moved Toro to Andrew"s farm. Since giraffes and cattle are both plant-eating animals that live in groups, their behaviours are much the same. Toro was accepted into the herd and wandered among the cattle as they ate grass. Toro doesn"t always behave like the other members of his new herd. Like many kinds of animals, cattle compete for dominance (支配). Standing more than 13 feet tall, Toro is more than three times taller than the biggest bull. But Toro never tries to be “the boss”.“He is very used to their company,” Andrew said. “When the herd enters the kraal (牲畜栏), the cows and bulls push each other. But thanks to his height, Toro does not need to join the mess,” said Andrew. When asked if Toro would ever be returned to the wild, Munetsi, an officer of the Department of Wildlife said no. “In the wild, he would find it difficult to be accepted into another herd or defend himself from predators (猎食者),” he added. “He seems very much at home and is respected by the cattle.” (

It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theatre"s 75-year history. This time, however, the clean-up was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theatre equipment in preparation for the building"s end. The classic film The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theatre. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say goodbye to the old building. Theatre owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed proper. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theatre is preparing to close down. Bradford said that large modern theatres in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theatre"s location (位置) was also a reason. “This used to be the centre of town,” he said. “Now the area is mostly

office buildings and warehouses.” Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theatre into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were given up because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theatre is located. The theatre audience said goodbye as Bradford locked the doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theatre has shown its last movie. The theatre will be missed. (

D The COVID-19 and flu are both respiratory infectious diseases, with similar symptoms including fever and cough, but they are not the same. Both the COVID-19 and flu are diseases caused by a virus. In the case of flu, the pathogens(病原体) are flu viruses, and for COVID-19,it is a novel coronavirus(新型冠状病毒). Common symptoms for flu and novel coronavirus are nearly identical fever, cough and tiredness, sometimes sore throat and diarrhea. In severe cases, they result in pneumonia(肺炎), and even deaths in the worst cases. Flu has seasonal ups and downs. Although it can exist all year round, the virus infects more people in winter and spring. As for the novel coronavirus, there is not yet

enough evidence showing how it would respond to changing weather. The mortality rate(死亡率) for the novel coronavirus is higher than that for flu. Generally, people with poor immunity(免疫力), especially children and seniors, are more likely to catch seasonal flu and develop into severe cases. As for the novel coronavirus, the median age for the infected is 51. But the novel coronavirus is a brand-new virus, and no one has total immunity no matter their age. Both the flu and the novel coronavirus are transmitted in similar ways,by direct contact with infected patients or small droplets from the nose or mouth when a person with viruses coughs or breathes.

Flu can be spread by an infected person for several days before their symptoms appear. As for the novel coronavirus, spread might be possible before people show symptoms, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. For the novel coronavirus, there is also a risk for aerosol transmission(气溶胶传播). In health facilities, people may catch the virus if they breathed in aerosol, the suspension of fine solid or liquid particles in the air, which have been contaminated by the virus. The novel coronavirus has also been found in patients" fecal(排泄物) samples, but fecal-oral transmission does not appear to be a major transmission route. (

)12.What can we learn about the novel coronavirus? A.It has seasonal changes. B. It causes less deaths than flu. C. It may spread among people of all ages. D. It only spreads after people show symptoms. (

)13.Which of the following is NOT the way the novel coronavirus transmits? A. Aerosol transmission. B. Contact transmission. C. Fecal-oral transmission. D. Age transmission. (

)14.The author"s main purpose of writing the article is probably to

  .

 A. prove flu has less harm to humans than COVID-19 B. raise people"s awareness of protecting their health C. prove COVID-19 probably won"t cause human deaths

 D. provide some suggestions to avoid COVID-19 infection (

)15.What does the passage mainly talk about? A. A new treatment on the novel coronavirus. B. The latest research on COVID-19 and flu. C. The difference between the novel coronavirus and flu. D.
