The Silk Road is arguably the most famous long-distance trade route of the ancient world. This passage connected Europe in the West with China in the East, and allowed the exchange of goods, technology, and ideas between the two civilizations.Although merchants could make huge profits traveling on the road,it was not without risk. The main Silk Road started in Chang’an (known today as Xi’an),the early Han Dynasty’s capital.Travelers commencing their journey from this city could take a northern route that would take them across China’s northwestern provinces. After this, they would face the Gobi Desert, arguably the greatest danger of the Silk Road. The Gobi Desert, the largest desert in Asia, consists mainly of rocky, hard earth. This feature made it easier for traders to travel across, compared to sandy deserts like the neighboring Taklimakan Desert.Like other deserts, the Gobi Desert is dry and hot,and therefore the biggest challenge travelers faced was obtaining enough water for themselves as well as for their camels. So,rest stops were created along the route, allowing travelers to rest, eat and drink. These places also promoted the exchange of goods, and even ideas, amongst the travelers who stopped there.Usually, the rest stops were placed within a day’s journey of each other. In this way, travelers could avoid spending too much time in the desert, which would make them be targets for robbers, another danger of the Silk Road. Once through the Gobi Desert, travelers would continue their journey into Iran,Turkey, and finally Europe. While this part of the journey may have been less dangerous,it is not entirely without peril. 1.The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to

Things I Wish I"d Known in High School Sometimes high school seems like a necessary evil. Now at the end of my college journey, I know that there are still more things I could have done to make my high school experience more beneficial.

 1

Take a class that scares you during high school. The experience will definitely prepare you for future academic challenges.

Don"t worry about your grades too much. Getting a B is not the end of the world.

 2

I have started college with all A"s since seventh grade, and it was hard to deal with not being abl e to repeat that. I stayed away from taking some harder courses I might have done well in because I was afraid of doing poorly. Now, I can fully accept that if I try my best in at least one harder class and get a B+, that is still something to be proud of.

Find your own de-stressing(解压) routine. Another essential skill to begin building in high school is how to manage work and stress. Maybe you deal with stress by going for a run, or watching a silly movie. Talk with a friend for a while or play with your dog. 3

Spend your summers wisely. Don"t take on a full-time job the first summer you decide to work. 4

Do find something to do that will make the ten weeks worthwhile. Look for programs that take you to interesting places, or a job that will give you insights into something you might be interested in.

Finally, remember to have fun. Your life does not depend on high school.

 5

You will have plenty of time to work hard in college and beyond. Be prepared, but don"t stress out too much about it. If you can make your high school experience fun, you will have no problem doing the same for your life in college and beyond.

A.In fact, it"s a kind of good thing. B.Take full advantage of your brain. C.You do have to be active in making friends. D.Do your best, but leave time for fun with friends. E.They will be improved if you make great efforts. F.Find out what relaxes you, and you will feel less stressed. G.Forty hours a week will be a huge shock and you"ll have plenty of time for that in the future.
