 11.请从(A、B、C、D、E 和 F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题, 并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。

 A. Decide to settle when growth is guaranteed. B. Follow other people"s paths. C. Blame others for the fault. D. Have faith in overnight success. E. Only pay attention to the dreams themselves. F. Believe someone else has the answers for you. FIVE WAYS TO KILL YOUR DREAMS

I dedicated the past two years to understanding how people achieve their dreams. When we think about the dreams we have, and the footprint we want to leave in the universe, it i s striking to see how big of an overlap there is between the dreams that we have and projects that never happen. So I"m here to talk to you today about five ways how not to follow your dreams. ________

You know the story, right? The tech guy built a mobile app and sold it very fast for a lot of money. You know, the story may seem real, but I bet it"s incomplete. If you go investigate further, the guy has done 30 apps before and he has done a master"s on the topic, a Ph.D. He has been working on the topic for 20 years. This is really interesting. I myself have a story in Brazil that people think is an overnight success. I come from a humble family, and two weeks before the deadline to apply to MIT, I started the application process. And, voila! I got in. People may think it"s an overnight success, but that only worked because for the 17 years prior to that, I took life and education seriously. Your overnight success story is always a result of everything you"ve done in your life through that moment. ________

Constantly, people want to help out, right? All sorts of people: your family, your friends, your business partners, they all have opinions on which path you should take: "And let me tell you, go through this pipe." But whenever you go inside, there are other ways you have to pick as well. And you need to make those decisions yourself. No one else has the perfect answers for your life. And you need to keep picking those decisions, right? The pipes are infinite and you"re going to bump your head, and it"s a part of the process. ________

So when your life is going great, you have put together a great team, and you have growing revenue, and everything is set — time to settle. When I launched my first book, I worked really, really hard to distribute it everywhere in Brazil. With that, over three million people downloaded it, over 50,000 people bought physical copies. When I wrote a sequel, some impact was guaranteed. Even if I did little, sales would be okay. But okay is never okay. When you"re growing towards a peak, you need to work harder than ever and find yourself another peak. Maybe if I did little, a couple hundred thousand people would read it, and that"s great already. But if I work harder than ever, I can bring this number up to millions. That"s why I decided, with my new book, to go to every single state of Brazil. And I can already see a higher peak. There"s no time to settle down. ________

I constantly see people saying, "Yes, I had this great idea, but no investor had the vision to invest." "Oh, I created this great product, but the market is so bad, the sales didn"t go well." Or, "I can"t find good talent; my team is so below expectations." If you have dreams, it"s your responsibility to make them happen. Yes, it may be hard to find talent. Yes, the market may be bad. But if no one invested in your idea, if no one bought your product, for sure, there is something there that

is your fault. Definitely. You need to get your dreams and make them happen. And no one achieved their goals alone. But if you didn"t make them happen, it"s your fault and no one else"s. Be responsible for your dreams. ________

Once I saw an ad, and it was a lot of friends, they were going up a mountain, it was a very high mountain, and it was a lot of work. You could see that they were sweating and this was tough. And they were going up, and they finally made it to the peak. Of course, they decided to celebrate, right? I"m going to celebrate, so, "Yes! We made it, we"re at the top!" Two seconds later, one looks at the other and says, "Okay, let"s go down." Life is never about the goals themselves. Life is about the journey. Yes, you should enjoy the goals themselves, but people think that you have dreams, and whenever you get to reaching one of those dreams, it"s a magical place where happiness will be all around. But achieving a dream is a momentary sensation, and your life is not. The only way to really achieve all of your dreams is to fully enjoy every step of your journey. That"s the best way. 12.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

The reality TV wildlife edition has just come to a dramatic end. The world watched as the bears packed on pounds before they went into their den (兽穴) for the winter. Over the next few months, Fat Bear Week

winner, 435 Holly, will go into hibernation (冬眠). Why do bears do this?

The mysteries around hibernating bears have attracted curious researchers for ages. What is hibernation, and what causes it? And probably most interestingly — could humans do this someday?

Dr. Kelly Drew, who studies hibernation, is one of the scientists consulting on a project funded by NASA, looking to put humans into hibernation for spaceflight. "For sending people to space, I think our first step is to perfect short-term hibernation-like periods in humans," she says. "If we can figure this out, we can then try for longer periods." We still have a long way to go before this science fiction dream becomes a reality, but several scientists around the country have been studying hibernation.

Cory Williams, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, says, "A huge variety of mammals (哺乳动物) hibernate. However, hibernation in bears is different from that in small mammals„their body temperature only drops a few degrees and they don"t experience periodic rewarming." In general, mammals with lower body temperatures during hibernation awaken every few days to raise their body temperature, or eat a bit. Bears do not emerge for any of these activities. Instead, they live off the fat they have collected during the summer and autumn months and even recycle their metabolic (新陈代谢的) waste.

At the moment, the study of hibernation has and continues to contribute greatly to applications in the human world. For example, bears are able to maintain their bone mass during hibernation, and understanding this could help advance the study of treating people with weak bones. Perhaps one day, it will be the key to sending humans far off into space too. (1)Why is 435 Holly mentioned in Paragraph 1?

  A.To show the popularity of

Fat Bear Week . B.To introduce the topic of hibernation. C.To call for the protection of bears. D.To advertise reality TV. (2)How do bears hibernate?

A.They produce new body fat. B.They lower their body temperature greatly. C.They sleep through the whole winter. D.They rewarm themselves regularly. (3)What"s the last paragraph mainly about?

A.The new findings about hibernation. B.The significance of studying hibernation.

C.The ways bears maintain their bone mass. D.The barriers to sending humans into space. (4)What"s the best title for the text?

A.What could bears and astronauts have in common? B.What effects does hibernation have on bears? C.Why do bears need to go into hibernation? D.How do humans and bears get along? 23.阅读理解

Nowadays wind is useful. Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources, as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power.

For many centuries, people used windmills to grind wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s, when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.

During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind. (1)From the text we know that windmills _____.

A.used to supply power to radio in remote areas B.have a history of more than 2800 years C.were invented by European armies D.have rarely been used since electricity was discovered (2)What was a new use for wind power in the late l9th century?

A.Sailing a boat. B.Grinding wheat into flour. C.Producing electricity. D.Pumping water from underground. (3)One of the reasons wind was rediscovered in the 1970 is that _____.

A.it is one of the oldest power sources B.wind power is cleaner C.it was cheaper to create energy from wind D.the supply of coal and gas failed to meet needs (4)What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?

A.The global trend towards producing power from wind. B.The design of wind power plants. C.The worldwide movement to save energy. D.The advantage of wind power.

There is some unwelcome news for students preparing for exams and officers putting in long hours—you don"t need that "refreshment(提神)

break" as much as you may think.

Scientists believed it was not easy for people to continue their work if they felt the need to have a snack or a rest to make them feel better. They argued that the only way to regain willpower is by supplying more energy to our bodies with rest, food or entertainment.

But psychologists have challenged this theory, saying weak willpower is in your head. They found that a person"s

mindset (理念) and belief about willpower determine how long and how well they"ll be able to work on a tough mental exercise. "If you think of willpower as something that"s limited, you"re more likely to be tired when you perform a difficult task," said Professor Veronika Job. "But if you think of willpower as something that is not easily depleted, you can go on and on."

The researchers led by Mr. Job designed an experiment to test the students" beliefs about willpower. After a tiring task those who believed or were led to believe that willpower was a limited resource performed worse on standard concentration tests than those who thought of willpower as something they had more control over.

Mr. Job said, "Students who may already have trouble studying are being told that their powers of concentration are limited, and they need to take frequent breaks. But a belief in willpower as a non-limited resource makes people stronger in their ability to work through challenges."

The findings could help people who are battling with temptation(诱惑): people following strict diets and doing exercise regularly to lose weight, people trying to overcome addictions, employees facing a tight deadline. Willpower isn"t driven by a biologically based process as much as we used to think. (1)What opinion did scientists have in the past?

A.Willpower was a limited resource. B.It was hard to regain willpower. C.Hardworking people seldom took breaks. D.People could easily feel tired when working. (2)Which of the following can replace the underlined word "depleted" in paragraph 3?

A.Given up. B.Recovered. C.Used up. D.Changed. (3)What can we learn from the findings of the experiment?

A.Students benefit most from the research. B.Frequent breaks are not good for learning. C.Will power can be regained after people have a good rest. D.The belief in willpower can change a man"s behaviour. (4)Why does the author write the text?

A.To explain the power of willpower. B.To show us how to build willpower. C.To tell us the ways of gaining willpower. D.To introduce a new theory on willpower. 七、改错题(共 1 1 题;共 5 5 分)
