 经济全球化背景下的高职英语教学改革

 摘要:在经济全球化背景下,企业在对英语专业人才需求量不断增加的同时,对其英语交际能力和岗位实际操作能力也提出了更高要求。以培养高等应用型人才为目标的高等职业院校,应该以就业为导向,以岗位能力标准为依据,以交际能力培养为重点,以现代化教学手段为依托,全面加强英语教学改革,切实提高人才培养的针对性。

  高职教育的培养目标是,培养适应生产、建设、管理、服务第一线高新技术职业岗位和岗位群需要的具有综合职业能力的高技术人才。随着经济全球化浪潮的冲击,中外合资企业、外商独资企业纷纷在中国落户,中国经济领域的各个方面也越来越紧密地融入到全球化的背景中,由此,高职毕业生用英语直接与外商、外籍客户交际以及以专业英语作为从事职业岗位基本媒介的需要更为普遍和迫切。然而,由于受应试教育体制的长期制约,我国的高校包括高职院校在内的英语教学,基本未走出以系统的英语言知识传授为重点,偏重英语阅读、写作、书面翻译能力培养的模式,导致了所谓“聋子英语”、“哑巴英语”现象广泛存在。由此,高职英语教学模式的全方位重新建构,已成为我们广大英语教师共同面临的重大实践性课题。

  一、全面树立以就业为目标的教学理念

  高职教育有两个基本特征:一是属于高等教育;二是属于职业技术教育。高职教育不是培养学术型和工程型人才的普通高等教育,也不是培养一般技术工人的中职教育,而是承担着培养我国经济转型和产业结构调整所大量需求的、“零培训”或短期培训就可以胜任具有较高技术含量职业岗位的大批量新型人力资源的历史重任。因此,从某种意义上来讲,当下中国社会的高职教育就是一种直面就业的教育。与此相适应,高职院校的英语教学理念也必须与普通高校做出明确区分。普通高校培养的毕业生应能在对外交往与合作、传播沟通信息和交流科技成果、从事各种类型的高层次管理与服务、参与教育与科研等方面发挥积极作用。因此,在对毕业生的英语水平要求方面,不仅要求他们具有扎实的听、说、读、写、译基本功,而且能把英语与相关专业知识相结合,成为“复合型”人才。高职院校培养的毕业生是以直接将所学知识和技能转化为现实生产力为特色的,因此,高职英语教学的培养目标不能照搬普通高校,也不应是普通本科英语教学内容的简单的量的压缩。对高职学生英语能力的培养,不仅要夯实基础,更重要的是突出实用性,在他们现有的英语基础上,在较短的受教育期限内掌握能直接服务于岗位工作的语言能力。

  教育部2000年《高职高专教育英语课堂教学基本要求(试行)》(以下简称《基本要求》)提出,高职英语教学“在加强英语语言基础知识和语言基本技能的同时,重视培养学生实际使用英语进行交际的能力。”因此,要把教学重点从关注语言系统转移到言语能力上。长期以来,普通教育把英语教学的重点放在语言系统上,关注的是语言系统中的语音、语汇和语法这三大要素,从而造成了所谓“聋子英语”、“哑巴英语”现象的大量存在。如果我们把教学重心定位在言语上,我们关注的将是另外三大要素:言语主体、言语环境和言语作品,从而把言语和言语活动作为主要教学内容,唯此,才有可能真正关注学生这一言语主体,才会把学生的需要即学生就业的需要作为教学活动的出发点,才能真正做到以学生为中心,并通过引导学生大量接触英语言语、创造性地运用英语言语去获得就业岗位需求的言语能力,进而真正实现高职英语教学的培养目标。

  二、教学内容职业化

  《联合国教科文组织关于职业技术教育与培训的第二届国际大会的建议》在“主题3——改革教育与培训过程”中论道:“21世纪学生所面临的挑战,要求对职业技术教育采取革新措施。最明白不过的是要对课程进行重新设计与定向,以便考虑新课题和新出现的情况,如技术、环境、学习外语与外国文化、企业情况,以及与休闲、旅游接待等有关的、迅速发展的服务业的要求。”又进一步指出,“迅速变化的时代会产生许多‘虚拟课程’,学生可凭藉这些虚拟课程来更新快过时的知识与技能,并学到许多通用的新知识与新技能;而在新时代的企业界,各种形式的自谋职业可为经济独立提供许多潜在的机会。”同样,高职英语课程也必须朝着内容职业化方向尽快完成改革。

  过去几年里,高职英语课程长期依赖本科院校教材,而本科英语教材缺少了高职教育的针对性和与岗位相联系的实用性,不能满足社会对高职人才英语能力的要求。《基本要求》印发后,专门面向高职学生的英语教材相继问世,应该说,新的系列教材较好地体现了《基本要求》的精神,保证了全国高职院校英语课程教学的顺利开展。但是,在内容职业化方面仍不能适应多数专业学生岗位英语能力培养的需要。笔者认为,职业教育课程整合主要应指建立实践知识与理论知识之间的内在联系,而整合的原则是“岗位实践的需要”。从理论与实践整合的角度看,项目课程是职业教育课程内容组织的必然选择,高职英语课程亦不例外。

  项目课程可以简单地定义为是以工作项目为中心来组织理论知识和实践知识的课程,这些知识不是按照本身的逻辑,而是按照“工作项目完成的需要”而被组织的,项目课程认为,与实践过程直接相联结的知识是实践知识,因此,实践知识是项目课程的核心,但为了促进对实践过程的理解,促进实践能力的迁移以及创造性实践能力的形成,根据实践的需要有选择地学习部分理论知识也是必要的。对项目课程来说,受过教育就意味着能完成一项工作任务。当课程内容以工作项目为中心而被组织时,这就始终在提醒学生,这些内容是与工作任务紧密相关的。这样,学生就会把更多的注意力放在工作任务,而不是单纯的知识上,他们会意识到,掌握这些知识仅仅是手段,最终的目的是有效地完成工作任务,这样,职业教育课程内容便能与岗位能力要求紧密地匹配起来。而高职英语项目课程的构建,必须分阶段、分学科、分专业实施,其基本思路可定位于:大一开设高职公共英语,大二、大三则针对不同专业和岗位需求,开设高职英语项目课程,使学生所学内容充分职业化。

  三、坚持交际法教学,强化英语交际能力的培养

  《基本要求》规定,高职“英语课程不仅应打好语言基础,更要注重培养实际应用英语的技能。”高职英语课堂教学应是一种师生互动的交际形式,着力于学生主体语言能力的生成与拓展,应是一个动态的、双向的语言信息交互过程。

  20世纪60年代,美国学者D.Hymes提出了交际能力的概念,涉及了潜在的语言知识和能力,包括交际场合。他认为,语言交际能力是用我们学过的语言知识点来有效而正确地在各种各样的场合中和不同的人进行交际。他指出,一个人的语言掌握得好还是不好,不仅仅取决于他会造很多的符合语法的句子,也取决于他是否具有正确运用语言的能力。

 所以,交际能力和掌握语言结构的好差无关,而和他在参与社会活动中运用语言能力的强弱有关。许多语言学家,如Widdowson,Candlin等等,都把语言看作是交际的工具。他们相信语言的教学应该是训练人的语言能力,而不仅仅是教他们掌握语言结构。他们的这些观点被英国的功能语言学家Firth和Halliday以及美国的社会语言学家John Gumper和William Labov所接受。1978年,Widdowson的《交际英语教学》一书出版,这本书成为20世纪70年代外语教学交际教学法迅速发展的基础。1981年,Johnson和Morrow共同编订了《课堂中的交际》一书,这一著作清晰地提出了交际教学法的理论与实践。交际法理论对“交际(Language AcquisitionDevice)”下的定义是:The process of rceiving stimuli and intel-pretmg them(assigning meanings to them)through our centralnelTous system,亦即:语言交际是通过我们的中枢神经系统,接收各种刺激和理解这些刺激(确认各种刺激意思)的过程。由此可见,交际是一个活动过程。交际法外语教学理论不再主张引导学生进行孤立的句型操练,而是从学生实际出发,确定学习目标,使教学过程交际化,其目标直接指向于培养学生的外语应用能力,这与高职英语的教学理念一致。

  运用交际法进行英语教学,首先要努力创设真实自然的社会语言情景。不仅要借助手式、动作、表情、实物、图片等手段为学生创设贴近教材内容的直观情景,而且要用语言的声调、节奏、情感等描述创设言语情景。其次,要将教学和用英语进行交际结合起来,把生活中的交际场合搬进课堂,使课堂变为一种具体的社会交往环境,使教学过程成为教师与学生之间的双向互动的交际过程。另外,要用英语教英语,把英语和所要表达的对象直接联系起来,让学生直接用英语理解和记忆英语,提高运用英语在不同场合中对不同对象进行有效交际的能力。

  对学生英语交际能力的培养必须置于丰富多彩的活动中。英语教学中,学生交际能力的形成和发展,是学生个体在学习过程中建立起来的,在活动中通过主、客体的相互作用获得个体经验的积累。知识和技能只是形成能力的前提,要使掌握的知识与技能转化成能力,还须将积累的知识和技能概括化、系统化。交际能力本身只有在活动中才得以形成和发展,如果缺乏相应的活动,任何能力都不可能形成和发展。教师在教学中应结合学生的专业特点,结合教学内容,准确、适时、有计划地组织训练活动,同时,还应引导学生投身于英语实际交际的实践活动中,在真实的交际环境里对所学知识和技能进行检验和反馈,促进交际能力的形成和发展。

  四、充分利用多媒体教学手段

  在科技—信息一经济全球化的当今世界,计算机和英谓是两大基础学科,也是两大工具学科。可以这么讲,谁掌握了计算机和英语,谁就有更多掌握和拥有世界上最先进的知识和信息的机会,对直接面向就业的高职生而言,二者不可或缺。另一方面,两者之间又有密切联系,计算机应用离不开英语,高职英语教学同样也不应该离开计算机多媒体技术的支撑。

  多媒体就是利用计算机和相关技术设备对图、文、声、像等多种媒体信息进行数字获取、管理、通信、处理,并能通过和用户的交互对话向用户提供所需信息的新一代的计算机集成环境。多媒体技术对文本(Text)、图形(Graph)、静止图像(stiu Image)、声音(Audio)、动画(Animalion)和视频(Video)等信息具有集成处理的能力,使教学手段趋于全方位、多层次,创造出更适合学生学习的开放的探索式的学习环境。

  多媒体的集成特征与网络化和存储技术相结合,可为高职英语教学提供大量的文字和非文字信息,极大地改善教学环境,多媒体计算机与Internet联网后,还可灵活、快速、高效调用国内外信息资源,从而改变传统英语教学单维文字或孤立静止图形传递信息的局面,以多维、多形式、多角度、高效、准确地向学生呈现与描述同一教学内容,特别是一些理工科、医科类等高职专业的科技英语文章,借助于多媒体技术环境的支持,可以加快学生的接收理解速度,加深学生的记忆,提高其专业英语技能。

  多媒体计算机能把电视机、录像机、录音机等所有的视听功能与计算机的交互功能结合,产生出图文并茂、生动形象的人机交互形式,以强烈的吸引力和感染力调动学生多感官参与,全身心投入,有效地激活学生的学习兴趣,增强学生的求知欲望。此外,多媒体机帮助教学的先进手段,如终端软件互联网等,改变了传统的被动学习局面,学生成了机器和设备的主人,完全可以根据自己的意愿控制学习,从而建立起自信心,消除焦虑和紧张感,充分体现出学生的主体作用。加上计算机网络可以提供协作学习模式,因而能有效地促进学生对所学知识的意义建构。多媒体技术环境还能激活和强化学生的创造力和创新意识,培养学生提出和解决问题的能力。

  多媒体计算机能为英语课堂教学创设逼真情景,从而为学生提供语言交际的真实情景。在传统的英语教学方式下,学生对英语的学习绝大部分是在课堂上进行的,由于缺乏真正自然的言语交际情景,语法规则的学习和语言使用规则的掌握往往出现脱节现象。多媒体计算机的一体化特征能为英语课堂教学活动的开展提供较为真实、自然的教学环境,教师和学生可以根据教学目的、内容和语言功能项目从浏览网上的资料库中选取和下载适当的图片、录像片段、文字介绍等,自由组合资料创设出理想情景。多媒体模拟仿真技术创造的各种真实情景,可以有效地刺激学生的语言交际欲望,使其能够主动开口讲英语,并且学会在不同交际情景中使用恰当得体的语言进行交流,从而逐步实现在实际的英语交际活动中运用自如。
