Television has given people newer and deeper understanding of history, art, music, literature, the ballet, the theater, the discoveries of modern science and the wonders of the universe. Television viewers pay no tax or charges for receiving programs on their sets. 　But that’s only organized basketball. Informally, the game has been learned by generations of American youths on city playgrounds and schoolyards, on lonely baskets put up in backyards of rural homes and on the driveway basketball courts of countless suburban homes. Here, playing on teams, going one-on-one against a single opponent or just shooting the ball hour after hour alone, some of the finest basketball players have developed their skills to incredible levels.

　I should have realized that, being only ten, he was probably too young to know how much we sometimes need the magic and romance of moonlight——a light that is nothing like the harsh glare of the sun that it reflects. Moonlight softens our faults; all shabbiness dissolves into shadow. It erases the myriad details that crowd and rush us in the sunlight, leaving only sharp outlines and highlights and broad brushstrokes——the fundamental shape of things.

　Often in the soothing, restorative glow we stare transfixed, bouncing our ambitions and hopes and plans off this great reflector. We dream our dreams; we examine the structure of our lives; we make considered decisions. In a hectic, confusing world, it helps to step out into a quiet, clear swath of moonlight, to seek out the fundamentals and eschew the incidentals.

　The night after I showed John the moon, he burst breathlessly through the door, calling,?“Mom, come out for a minute!”?This time, he led me, coatless and shivering. The driveway gravel crunched underneath our sneakers. From somewhere in the woods beyond the pond, the plaintive calls of geese honked and died away.

　Past the row of pine trees that line the road, the sky opened up with the full moon on it, suspended so precariously close that it might come hurtling toward us——?incandescent, even larger and more breathtaking than the night before, climbing its motionless climb over the molten silver of our pond. Even a ten-year-old could see this wasn’t just the moon. This was The Moon.

　When I turned around, John was grinning, expectant, studying my face intently to see if he had pleased me. He had. I knew that now the moon was following him too.

　该译文采取的抽象描述语言形象化的处理以及翻译时侧重考虑译入语的表达习惯等其实体现了译者归化的翻译技巧的灵活应用。归化和异化是翻译时常用的方法。归化指译者采取透明、流畅的风格以尽可能减弱译语读者对外语语篇的生疏感的翻译策略；异化则指刻意打破目的语的行文规范而保留原文的某些异域特色的翻译策略。可以说，任何译文都是归化和异化翻译策略相互结合的产物，而归化尤为重要，因为对异域语言文化规范的接纳和吸收必须在本民族语言文化规范的根基上进行。

　(6)Reading is a pleasure of the mind, which means that it is a little like a sport: your eagerness and knowledge and quickness make you a good reader. Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work. Your own imagination works along with the author's or even goes beyond his. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.

　　Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate, together they all add up to something; they are connected with each other and with other cities. The same ideas, or related ones, turn up in different places; the human problems that repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in literature, but with different solutions according to different writings at different times.

　　Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate on books somebody tells you "ought" to read, you probably won't have fun. But if you put down a book you don't like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it, you will almost certainly have a good time--and if you become as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or more gentle, you won't have suffered during the process.

　But this explanation may appear too simple to satisfy the sceptics, who have recently discovered that Jordan does not lead an untroubled private life. 　The most lurid speculation suggests these facts are linked. 　The seven counties of Central America?—?Guatemala, Panama, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica—?are full of natural beauty and cultural treasures. Many of the region’s nature reserves, ancient Maya settlements and colonial cities have been declared world cultural heritage sites by the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization .

　There are lots of volcanoes and an exotic animal kingdom to explore, yet few people outside the region know of them. The view into the crater of the Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua is a breathtaking experience, enlivened by the accompanying strong smell of sulphur and the loud screaming of parrots. Yet the car park on the edge of the crater is nearly empty. This is a boon for daring travelers who can enjoy all the beauty without having to share it with hordes of others visitors.

　El Salvador has a?“?road of flowers,”?and Nicaragua has a?“?road of white villages?”?connecting villages from the colonial period. Honduras is developing a means of connecting the native American communities in the Atlantic coast. Geological enthusiasts could also follow a volcanic trail through Central America. There are many volcanoes in just a small area, some with perfectly cone-shaped peaks constantly emitting smoke from their crates. Some of them are partially accessible.

　A bus travels to the edge of the Masaya craters in Nicaragua, an active volcano just 500 metres high. For safety reasons, every traveler should get information from the local tourism authority before climbing a volcano. (252 words)

　(9) I, by comparison, living in my overpriced city apartment, walking to work past putrid sacks of street garbage, paying usurious taxes to local and state governments I generally abhor, I am rated middle class. This causes me to wonder, do the measurements make sense? Are we measuring only that which is easily measured?—?the numbers on the money chart?—?and ignoring values more central to the good life?

　For my sons there is of course the rural bounty of fresh-grown vegetables, line-caught fish and the shared riches of neighbors’?orchards and gardens. There is the unpaid baby-sitter for whose children my daughter-in-law baby-sits in return, and neighbors who barter their skills and labor. But more than that, how do you measure serenity? Sense of self?

　I don’t want to idealize life in small places. There are times when the outside world intrudes brutally, as when the cost of gasoline goes up or developers cast their eyes on untouched farmland. There are cruelties, there is intolerance, there are all the many vices and meannesses in small places that exist in large cities. Furthermore, it is harder to ignore them when they cannot be banished psychologically to another part of town or excused as the whims of alien groups—when they have to be acknowledged as?“part of us.”

　Nor do I want to belittle the opportunities for small decencies in cities—the eruptions of one-stranger-to-another caring that always surprise and delight. But these are, sadly, more exceptions than rules and are often overwhelmed by the awful corruptions and dangers that surround us.
