A He was an old man who fished alone in a small boat on the sea and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish, the boy"s parents had told him that the old man was now salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone with another boat which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his boat empty and he always went down to help him carry the fishing tools. The sail looked like the flag of failure forever. The old man was thin with deep wrinkles(

皱纹)in the back of his neck. His body was terribly brown because of the strong sunlight on the sea every day and his hands had the deep scars(

伤 疤)from dealing with heavy fish on the lines. But none of these scars were fresh. Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful. “Santiago,” the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from the sea. “I could go with you again. We’ve made some money.” The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him. “No,” the old man said. “You"re with a lucky boat. Stay with them.” “But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks.” “I remember,” the old man said. “I know you did not leave me because you doubted.” “It was papa who made me leave. I am a boy and I must follow him.” “I know,” the old man said. “It is quite normal.” “He hasn’t much faith(信心).” “No,” the old man said. “But we have. Haven’t we?” Yes, the boy said. "Can I offer you a beer on the Terrace? “Why not?” the old man said. “Between fishermen. ” 21. The old man fished on the sea without taking a fish for 84 days. 22. The boy’s parents thought the old man had bad luck. 23. From the story, we could sense that old man still believed he was able to catch fish. 24. The boy left the old man because he doubted.

 25. The old man was the boy’s grandfather.

C It almost seems too hard to believe, but there is now a banana that has an

edible peel. Most people would never think of eating the peel of a banana. However, banana farmers in Japan have created a special way for growing bananas with a peel we can eat. The new banana-growing method is called the "freeze-thaw awakening". Farmers in Okayama, in the west of Japan, keep their banana trees at a freezing cold temperature of -60° Celsius. The farmers then replant the trees in 27ºC temperatures. The huge change in temperature makes the tree suddenly grow too quickly for the peel to fully mature(成 熟 ). This makes the skin thin and soft enough to eat. The peel of their “Mongee Banana” is not very tasty, but it is thinner and far less bitter than that of common bananas, making it 100% edible. The new kind of banana is called the “Mongee”, which means excellent. Farmers are now selling it in small bunches of 10 bananas. Farms only produces 10 bananas per week, and they only send them to the Fruit Corner of Tenmanya Okayama, a local department store. But even if you happen to find one available, you’d probably be put off by the price – 648 yen ($5.7) per fruit. The farmers have not grown a lot of Mongee bananas, so the price is high. They want to grow more so they can sell them all over the world. This means the price will come down. Bananas are the most popular fruit in Japan. Similar to other countries, Japan imports most of its bananas. About 99% of bananas in Japanese stores are from other countries. The Mongee could mean Japanese people eat more home-grown bananas. Japanese site SoraNews24 was lucky enough to receive a few Mongee bananas for review( 评

sugar content( 含量), 24.8 grams, compared to the average 18.3 grams. They have a stronger smell as well, and a distinctly tropical, almost “pineapple-like” taste. The Mongee banana skin contains nutrients such as vitamin B6 and magnesium(镁). The day we all stop peeling bananas and instead bite straight through their skin may still be a long way away, but it’s nice to know that 100% edible bananas already take place.
