　There has been much disagreement over children's education in recent years. One of the questions under debate is whether children benefit more from boarding schools or from going to day schools and staying with their parents after school. This issue is becoming a matter of concern for more and more people, especially for parents with only one child.

　Those who are against children going to boarding schools argue that such schools are usually much more costly than ordinary day schools. As a result, it tends to be children from rich families who attend them may gradually develop a sense of superiority towards those from other families, while the latter may feel rese ntful.

　We also have to take in to acco unt the fact that many families cannot afford to send their childre n to boardi ng schools. Aga in, childre n atte nding board ing schools have less time to com muni cate with their pare nts, which may eve ntually create a gap betwee n them, and weake n family ties.

　On the other hand, people who are in favor of childre n going to board ing schools point out that a boarding school is an ideal place for cultivating children's in depe nden ce, which they seldom lear n from their pare nts at home. Childre n who have the experie nee of going to board ing schools tend to come up with their own soluti ons to problems they encoun ter in stead of tur ning to their pare nts or other people for help. 　Weighi ng the pros and cons of these argume nts, I am in cli ned to agree with the latter point of view. For one thing, it seems to me that there is more to education than merely learning from teachers and textbooks. The experience of living with other children and taking care of themselves can give children valuable lessons about how to behave properly, how to overcome difficulties and, most importa nt of all, how to th ink rati on ally. I believe that childre n sometimes learn more from other children than from adults. For another, many parents are too busy with their work to pay eno ugh atte nti on to their childre n's growth eve n if their children go to day schools, not to mention the fact that there are still some pare nts who are not qualified to in struct childre n and impose more n egative in flue nces tha n positive on es.

　In many countries, these days, there is a growing tendency for children to take paid work, even though they are still receiving education in primary schools. 　Those on the pro side say that stude nts ben efit a lot from travelli ng or work ing for a year before going to college. First, they can obtain social experienee and thus better coordi nate their objectives of lear ning with the n eeds of the society.
