 Background Information

 1.Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation (Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation, with hyphen, from 1935 to 1985)—also known as 20th Century Fox, 20th Century Fox Pictures, or simply 20th or Fox—is one of the six major American film studios as of 2011[update]. Located in the Century City area of Los Angeles, just west of Beverly Hills, the studio is a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.

 The company was founded on May 31, 1935,[1] as the result of the merger of Fox Film Corporation, founded by William Fox in 1915, and Twentieth Century Pictures, founded in 1933 by Darryl F. Zanuck, Joseph Schenck, Raymond Griffith and William Goetz.

 20th Century Fox is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

 2.The Academy Awards, informally known as The Oscars, are a set of awards given annually for excellence of cinematic achievements. The Oscar statuette is officially named the Academy Award of Merit and is one of nine types of Academy Awards. Organized and overseen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS),[1] the awards are given each year at a formal ceremony. The awards were first given in 1929 at a ceremony created for the awards, at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood.

 As one of the most prominent award ceremonies in the world, the Academy Awards ceremony is televised live in more than 100 countries annually. It is also the oldest award ceremony in the media; its equivalents, the Grammy Awards (for music), the Emmy Awards (for television), and the Tony Awards (for theater), are modeled after the Academy Awards.

 3.The musical film is a film genre in which songs sung by the characters are interwoven into the narrative, sometimes accompanied by dancing. The songs usually advance the plot or develop the film's characters, though in some cases they serve merely as breaks in the storyline, often as elaborate "production numbers".

 The musical film was a natural development of the stage musical after the emergence of sound film technology. Typically, the biggest difference between film and stage musicals is the use of lavish background scenery and locations that would be impractical in a theater. Musical films characteristically contain elements reminiscent of theater; performers often treat their song and dance numbers as if there is a live audience watching. In a sense, the viewer becomes the deictic audience, as the performer looks directly into the camera and performs to it.

 The Pursuit of Happyness is a 2006 American biographical drama film based on

  Chris Gardner's nearly one-year struggle with homelessness. Directed by Gabriele Muccino, the film features Will Smith as Gardner, an on-and-off-homeless salesman-turned stockbroker. Smith's son Jaden Smith co-stars, making his film debut as Gardner's son Christopher Jr.

 For his performance, Smith, was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

 Willard Christopher "Will" Smith, Jr. (born September 25, 1968),is an American actor, producer, and rapper. He has enjoyed success in television, film and music. In April 2007, Newsweek called him the most powerful actor in Hollywood.Smith has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, two Academy Awards, and has won four Grammy Awards.

 The wrong spelling “Happyness” is the highlight of the movie. The director intended to present an error in the title with the implication that Chister Gardner has undergone various, unbelievable hardships in life to pursue his happiness. The spelling error first appears on the wall of his son’s kindergarten which received those children whose family can’t support them to a good one with more fees.

 4. Explain “American Dream”.

 The American Dream is the concept widely held in the United States of America, that through hard work, courage and determination one can achieve prosperity (often associated with the protestant work ethic). These were the values of the original pioneers who crossed the American plains when Northern Europeans first came to America. What the American dream has become is a question under constant discussion.

  The American Dream is a national ethos of the United States, a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility achieved through hard work. In the definition of the American Dream by James Truslow Adams in 1931, "life should be better and richer and fuller for

  everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.

  The idea of the American Dream is rooted in the United States Declaration of Independence which proclaims that "all men are created equal" and that they are "endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights" including "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

  The American Dream can be described as a belief in the freedom that allows all citizens and residents of the United States of America to achieve their goals in life through hard work. Today, in America it generally refers to the idea that one's prosperity depends upon one's own abilities and hard work, not on a rigid class structure, though the meaning of the phrase has changed over America's history. For some, it is the opportunity to achieve more prosperity than they could in their countries of origin; for others, it is the opportunity for their children to grow up with an education and career opportunities; for others, it is the opportunity to be an individual without the constraints imposed by class, caste, race, or ethnicity.

 Plot Description:

 Forrest Gump grows up in Green bow, Alabama. Although his IQ is just 75, his mother strives to make him feel no different from others.

  Jenny is a motherless girl whose father is a alcoholic. Forrest and Jenny attend the same school and are best friends all the way up to high school. During his life, Forrest achieves a lot more than any normal people may dream of. He becomes a college student because he can run very fast and is recruited in the college football team. After playing football for five years, Forrest join the army with his college degree. In the army, he meet a black young man called Bubba who does not look down upon him and they become good friends. On the battlefield in Vietnam, Forrest saves the lives of many fellow soldiers, but he loses his friend Bubba. Among the people saved by Forrest, there is Lieutenant Dan, who loses both his legs and insists that dying on the battlefield is his destiny. It happens that Forrest has an talent for ping-pong, so he is placed in the All-American Ping-Pong Team to visit China together with official delegation headed by President Nixon.

  With the money from doing advertisement for a Ping-Pong paddle company, Forrest begins his life as a shrimp boat captain in honor of Bubba whose dream it was to buy a shrimp boat of his own and to do business Forrest's boat which later survives a severe hurricane and makes Forrest a millionaire.

 Film Theme:

 DESTINY

 To face destiny, this film has three kinds figure represent three attitudes. Forrest’s mother represent believer, Captain Dan represent suspicious men, Jenny represent rebel. 

 Maybe destiny is like that feather, which has no concrete direction ,and the ordinary experience tired us. However, any turning is controlled by themselves freely, there’s one thing you must do ─ do you best.

 “I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is.”

  Love is film’s eternal theme. We give our tears and laughter generously. The love in this film is a process which a man with low IQ speaks out “love”. I think that Forrest doesn’t only say to Jenny, but also say to his mother and Buba. Because the love realized by Forrest includes many things, not only heart.

  The death of his mother and many times Jenny’s disappearance let Forrest know what love is .In fact, no matter whether Jenny love Forrest, Forrest gets love and we get love from this film.

 Plot Summary

 The story begins with the trial of a young banker, Andy Dufrense, who victimized by circumstantial evidence. The Shawshank, which enjails lots of people. They have been in the prison for tens of years ,so they won’t go abroad. Because they won’t and also they can’t. they lived here for years without hope, and they lived just in the small prison, where nobody knows what is their dream, what’s their hope. Like the old man said: Some birds aren't meant to be caged, but most birds will choose to stand it. They tried too many times but they never finish it, so they gave up. Nonetheless, Andy tried. He has the bright brain ,the never fading persistent, and the most important thing----hope.

 Background Information

 Global warming is an increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere, especially a sustained increase sufficient to cause climatic change. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) between the start and the end of the last century. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report, "most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in human greenhouse gas concentrations".

  In 2007 the IPCC forecasted that by 2100 global average surface temperatures would increase 3.2 – 7.2 °F (1.8 – 4.0 °C). Many scientists predict that the increase in temperature would cause polar ice caps and mountain glaciers to melt rapidly, significantly raising the levels of coastal waters, and would produce new patterns and extremes of drought and rainfall, seriously disrupting food production in certain regions.  The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC or FCCC) is an international environmental treaty produced at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), informally known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro from 3 to 14 June 1992.   Leading Stars

  Ingrid Bergman was born in Stockholm, Sweden on August 29, 1915. Anastasia won Ingrid the New York Film Critics Award and her second Oscar (her first was for Gaslight in 1944). Thus began a new, successful phase in her career. Other notable films of Bergman include Casablanca (1942) with Humphrey Bogart, For Whom the Bell Tolls(1943) with Gary Cooper, and Hitchcock’s Spellbound(1945) with Gregory Peck.

  Humphrey Bogart (1899-1957), the quintessential tough guy, remains one of Hollywood’s most enduring legends and one of the most beloved stars of all time.

 His inimitable onscreen persona(角色)– hard-bitten, cynical, and enigmatic(高深莫测的)– continues to cast a monumental shadow over the motion picture landscape. Sensitive yet masculine, cavalier(漫不经心的) yet heroic, his ambiguities and contradictions combined to create a larger-than-life(传奇色彩的) image which remains the archetype of the contemporary antihero(反传统的主角).

  The story is set in early December 1941 in a city (and café), in a dangerous, far-off locale(地点)that is a microcosm(缩影) of the wartime world— the crowded, stucco-walled coastal city of Casablanca, technically ruled by neutral unoccupied France located out of war-torn Europe. It focuses on a man torn between, in the words of one character, love and virtue. He must choose between his love for a woman and helping her and her Czech Resistance leader husband escape from the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis.

 imprisoned Europe turned hopefully, or desperately toward the freedom of the Americas. Lisbon became the great embarkation(乘飞机) point. But not everybody could get to Lisbon directly. And so a torturous, roundabout refugee trail sprang up. Paris to Marseilles across the Mediterranean to Oran. Then by train, or auto or foot across the rim of Africa to Casablanca in French Morocco. Here, the fortunate ones, through money or

 influence or luck might obtain exit visas and scurry to Lisbon. And from Lisbon to the new world, while the others waited in Casablanca.
